Metal is a generic term that classifies a category of malleable chemicals that are strong and durable. Steel, iron, aluminum, and alloys such as bronze and brass, are all metals. All of these materials are used to construct buildings, make cars, fabricate aircraft, ocean vessels and of course, signs. In the pastime of American signmaking, wood, ceramic, sheet metal, and plastic were the materials used to make signs. Nowadays, most of these materials have been phased out. However, since the technology has evolved, plastic is the main translucent material used to make signs. Plastics, such as acrylic, tuff glass, and lexan are some of the main components of sign fabrication. |
