ADA Compliant Signage - ADA Signs

custom ada signs
ADA is an abbreviation for American Disabilities Act. ADA has a long history in America. The shift towards recognizing people with disabilities began in 1973 with the efforts of many people. ADA later became recognized, officially, in 1977. In 1988, Congress began official implementation of ADA guidelines throughout the US. Any building with public access is required by law to be ADA compliant which is usually accomplished with ADA signage. At Flynn Signs, we are experts in the field of ADA signs.

When someone asks for ADA signs, they are usually asking for a sign with tactile graphics and grade 2 Braille. Tactile means perceptible by touch. Tactile graphics are raised words, symbols and images a blind person can touch. Tactile graphics gives a blind person the assurance they are touching an ADA sign with a Braille system. Grade 2 Braille is a system invented in 1821 by Louis Braille. Braille is a method for blind people to read (and write) by touch, usually with very small semi-circles embedded into a sign surface that are substitutes for words or phrases. Braille-assisted signs allow blind people to move about independently without assistance from others.

The same occurrence is needed for ADA bathroom signs in special housing facilities and centers for the disabled. The implications are far-reaching. With the growth of new construction and the retrofitting and refurbishing of old buildings, the need for parking has become an issue of paramount importance. Based on Federal ADA regulations, all parking lots must have ADA compliant parking spaces with at least one space designated to be van accessible. Each space must have a sign posted on a post or wall set in front of the space. In addition to this sign, each space must have pre-approved stripping on the pavement with an “international symbol of accessibility” (ISA) painted in blue.
